Tango

The TANGO began in the brothels of Argentina, so to capture the character of the dance, ladies should give the appearance of being a prostitute enticing the guys the pay for their pleasure not appearing to like the guys much.

The Ballroom style is considerably different as can be seen in the clip below from the World Championships Professionals in 1979. The Ballroom style originated in the mid 1930´s Germany when couples decided to change the stance to something closer to the typical Ballroom stance & make it look more staccato & the top of the ladiesī left thumbs should make contact with their partnersī right armpits.

The video clip below from the film "Take The Lead" captures the original character of the dance brilliantly. Performed by Antonio Banderas the story is about Pierre Dulaineīs work in America as a professional dancer. Antonio is not a dancer by profession, so he must have worked incredibly hard on the choreography below to make it look so good. It must have taken ages for him to learn & rehearse.

If you think that was good, you should see the following clip.

Tango was also included in a number of Old Time & Sequence dances such as the Tango Sereda & the Square Tango. Note that the ladiesī left hands should rest on top of the menīs arms in Old Time dancing.

Ladies clothing styles have changed enormously since the clip left was filmed, but this style of the dance hasnīt changed as shown the next video clip.

Tango is essentially a social dance which normally utilises lead & follow techniques as shown in the clip below.

Argentinean Tango came from a faster dance called Milonga as shown on the following clip.

Argentinean Tango dancers also dance a kind of Tango called "Vals" to Viennese Waltz music as shown below. Vals is Spanish for "Waltz".
