The Ballroom stance takes quite a while for most people to develop because it requires that one should not slouch at all. In fact, Men should stand perfectly upright & ladies should arch backwards a little to the left so that there is space between the upper bodies, but contact in the pelvic area. This stance should be the same for all Waltzes, Foxtrot & Quickstep but not Tango. Most people refer to the Slow Waltz as the Waltz.
Waltz Music is characterised by the fact that is the only rhythm which has 3 beats in each bar of music. 3 different types of Waltzes would be danced to it depending on its speed.
The original Waltz music is fast, and the dance which began in Vienna, Austria would be called the Viennese Waltz - no surprise. The following video clip shows the Viennese Waltz danced beautifully & explained very clearly. These are the only steps which people tend to dance socially & the only ones in the sylabus up to 3rd Gold Star medal (ISTD) (or Gold Bar IDTA).
The clip below show the Hiltons performing a fabulous choreographed Viennese Waltz which would not be possible to dance entirely using lead/follow technique alone.
When Waltz music speed is in between the 2 above, it would be suitable for one of the Old Time Waltz sequences. Old Time dances are routines which every couple on the dance floor would dance to at the same time. Most Old Time sequences would be typically be either Waltz, Twostep, Tango, Foxtrot, Saunter, Polka or Gavotte taking up 16 bars of music.
The clip below shows an Old Time sequence known as the "Lilac Waltz" in n amateur competition.
The clip below shows amateurs dancing the "St. Bernard's Waltz.
There are a number of other Old-Time Waltz routines including the Veleta. The Old-Time Waltz step is included in a number of Old-Time Twosteps too.
The following video clip shows Marcus & Karen Hilton an excellent basic slow Waltz. They are the 9 time professional international standard world champions and were also once 10-dance world champions. Dancing like this does not need to be choreographed - this is all danced using a lead/ follow technique. It would take a while to learn to dance like this, but it would not be necessary to have a regular partner to dance like this.
Here are the Hiltons again in the clip below. To perform a show like this needs to be choreographed because it would not be possible to use 100% lead/follow techniques.
The American Country Western Dancers also dance the Slow Waltz. The rhythm is still waltz, but the character has changed due to the music so the clothes match that genre.
The clip below shows a spoof medley of some Old Time Sequences shown on the 2 Ronnies in 1972/73. Included amongst the dancers are Rita Pover & Ansell Chezan.
